BIO

Josef Dawes

My passion for crafts and using traditional materials was something engrained into me as a small child.
Raised by artisan parents that influenced me greatly and filled my childhood with creativity.
At 6 years old I was entrusted with with my first set of tools that my father gave me. In there was a small pocket knife that was once his when he was a child.
I was taught safety and responsibility and soon enough i was making my own quills and learning to carve and sculpt.
Many years later at 13 years old I began to indulge in blacksmithing. I forged mostly knives and simple utensils.
At 17 years I was introduced to a Master Armourer and I guess he took a shining to me... maybe I reflected his youth and admired my enthusiasm. From here every Saturday I would meet him at his workshop and he would teach me what whatever I asked of him, and of course many a brew did I make!
At 18 I was offered a bench to start my own business and I snapped up the idea with great pleasure and excitement.

12 years on as a professional Weaponsmith I am now working for very high level clients.

I am heavily involved in the film industry of which the vast majority of my work is located, manufacturing and designing masters, hero swords and weaponry.
I have a high level of knowledge in the process from original designing to the end result as they go to mass prop making. Understanding what works and what wouldn't work in the prop moulding and set aspects.

I also work as a highly regarded 'artist' and craftsman in the world of Historical Sport (HMB) and reenactment where the weaponry must be of the highest strength and durability, whilst I am forever improving my designs the artistic touch that I employ into all of my work makes it stand out from the crowd. Many of my customers have names for their products that I have forged for them.
